Brief Introduction

The Parasitology Department offers medical services including laboratory diagnosis ( coprological and serological ) , clinical diagnosis and treatment of inpatients and outpatients attending MRI . The department carries scientific research covering different aspects of parasitic diseases in collaboration with all departments of MRI . The Parasitology Department has a unique feature of having variation in professionality including Medical Parasitology , Tropical Medicine , Public Health Parasitology and Immunology . The department has a wide experience in human fascioliasis  

Field of Interest

  • Implentation of novel strategies to control parasitic diseases which affect the health of a great proportion of Egyptians.
  • Evaluation of safety and efficacy of drugs for parasitic diseases.
  • Development of advanced diagnostic methods for detection of early and light parasitic infections.
  • Preparation of parasite antigens to be used for diagnosis and assessment of cure.     

Activities, Research, and Services

  • Routine work for diagnosis of parasitic diseases
    1. Stool examination including
      • Direct smears and concentration techniques ( saline sedimentation and formal ether ) for diagnosis of parasitic diseases
      • Quantitative technique for determination of intensity of infection
      • Advanced methods for detection of very light infection
      • Permanent stained stool smears for identification of newly emerging protozoa
    2. Detection of occult blood in stool for diagnosis of a number of gastrointestinal diseases
    3. Blood film for diagnosis of blood parasites as Malaria , Trypansoma , Filaria
    4. Serological test for diagnosis of early infection and tissue parasite
  • Collaboration with other departments of MRI , Faculty of Medicine and HIPH in scientific research covering all aspects of parasitic diseases
  • The Parasitology Department has achieved many projects sponsored by WHO and Ministry of Health concerned with diagnosis , treatment and control of parasitic diseases endemic in Egypt mainly Schistosoma and Fasciola
  • Teaching syllabus of the degrees awarded by the department
  • Seminars and scientific meetings
