Brief Introduction

The department was established in 1974 as an independent entity in recognition of the growth and importance of the science of immunology to medicine and to the immunopathogenesis, diagnosis and treatment of diseases. It is the first and only Department of immunology in the country devoted specifically to the study of the immune system. The department offers several postgraduate programs that leads to diploma, master of science and doctorate degrees in the field. Recently, the department was accredited to to give the necessary studies and training to physicians willing to be specialized in allergy Hence, the name of the department was changed to immunology and allergy in 2008.

The laboratories of Immunology Department are comprised of two sets one located in the extension of the medical research Institute and is located in Smouha district of Alexandria and is the research laboratories while, the second one is located in the mother institute and is the diagnostic immunology laboratory.

Field of Interest

The Department of Immunology is a centre of excellence in:

  • Immunology training to both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • High quality research in basic and clinical immunology.
  • Referral center in providing immunological laboratory services in this country as:
    • Study of the cellular immunological components in the different diseases.
    • Study of the molecular immunological components in the different diseases.
    • Study of the auto-antibodies in the different diseases.
    • HLA typing for transplantion and disputed paternity.

Activities, Research, and Services

  • Conducting continued medical training workshops for both undergraduate and postgraduate students especially on Tissue culture techniques, diagnosis of autoimmune diseases, and use of HLA typing in transplantation and disputed paternity.
  • Conducting various routine clinical immunological investigations as complement levels, immunological levels, evaluating the functions of both humoral as well as cell mediated immunity, HLA typing, antinuclear antibody testing….ect.
  • Conducting various laboratory investigations related to autoimmune and immunodeficiency diseases.
  • Councilling for allergy and Immunological disorders.

Degrees

The Immunology Program at the Medical Research Institute offers a highly interactive, multidisciplinary course of study leading to a diploma, Master of science or doctoral degree that prepares students for successful careers as independent investigators in cellular, molecular, and diagnostic immunology. Students are exposed to contemporary research problems in basic and clinical immunology and, at the same time are given a strong background in biomedical research.

  • Diploma in allergy
    Recently introduced to physicians with diploma or an equivalent degree in chest, ENT or dermatology
  • Diploma in Diagnostic Immunology
    For graduates of biomedical and medical laboratory sciences
  • Master in Immunology and Allergy
  • .D of Science in Immunology and Allergy: This Doctor of Science program is ordinarily for students with a previous medical or biomedical degree, designed for those interested in immunology, molecular biology, virology, and the epidemiology of diseases. The program prepares students for postdoctoral fellowships and/or junior faculty positions at academic institutions; and positions in independent scientific research institutions, governmental agencies, and the biotechnology industry
