Organized By Prof. Dr. Mohamed Samy Afifi M.D, Ph.D
20 - 22 September 2011
3-Days workshop
In
biomedical research, laboratory animals have taken on enormous
importance as models for elucidating and predicting behaviour, health,
and diseases or for information regarding basic biologic processes. In
most areas of research, there is an increasing recognition that
constant, dependable experimental conditions are essential in order to
obtain reproducible and reliable information. Most investigators are
aware of the need for a research system with as few variables as
possible, but oftentimes the laboratory animal is not considered.
Therefore, The purpose of this workshop is to provide a solid
understanding of basic techniques needed to use laboratory animals in
research. The workshop will concentrate on the use of mice, rats,
guinea pig and hamster. Training will be achieved through classroom and
laboratory work. Attendants will gain significant experience in
manipulating, housing and care of laboratory animals. Also, will have
hands on training on the basic techniques needed to conduct critically
appraised research on those laboratory animals models and their
relevance.
In Laboratory work, all attendants will master all the following techniques:
1- Handling and animal dissection 2- injection and bleeding of animals 3- immunization 4- skin irritation , contact and delayed hypersensitivity 5- induction of ascites 6- Induction of diabetes 7- Using mice in maintaining cell lines 8- Minor surgical procedure ( subcutaneous implantation)
Who should attend?
Postgraduates
and graduates working in various fields of biomedical research
(Immunology, Virology, Microbiology, pharmacology, biochemistry, Surgery
ect…), personnel of pharmaceutical companies as well as all laboratory
personnel dealing with animal models in biomedical research.
