MICROWAVE PROCESSING TECHNIQUE
FOR ELECTRON MICROSCOPY
An Electron Microscope Workshop
3 - 5 of December 2012
Introduction
Microwave-accelerated
sample preparation of biological specimens is a field that continues to
grow rapidly as evidenced by the number of innovated articles written
each year. The reason for this increase in the microwave literature is
simple. Microwave accelerated procedure speed up reaction processes and
save time. In short, microwave-accelerated technique can be used to
improve the efficiency of a variety of histopathology laboratory
procedures such as fixation, decalcification, processing of specimen for
paraffin or resin embedding and staining.
WORKSHOP OBJECTIVES
The
intended audience is students and researchers with expertise interest
in their field of research using electron microscope. This workshop aims
to introduce the use of home microwave oven to accelerate the
processing technique in electron microscopy lab. In addition of giving
an intensive training to all equipment related to sample preparation
including animal perfusion, ultramicrotomy and electron microscope.
Topics also cover the basic parameters, which influence the image, and
resolution.
WORKSHOP OUTLINE
In addition to practical sessions, this workshop includes the following lectures:
1. Fundamentals of electron microscopes construction.
2. Sample preparation techniques
3. Microwave processing technique for electron microscopy.
4. Artifacts confuse interpretations of TEM
