WORKSHOP ON

BASIC STATISTICAL TECHNIQUES USING SPSS

Organized By

Prof. Dr. ADEL ZAKI
Prof.Emeritus of the Medical Statistics Unit, Medical Research Institute Alexandria University

Duration

15TH – 16TH
February 2012

BACKGROUND AND JUSTIFICATION

Biostatistics is an essential integral part of research. As healthcare professionals involved in reading research papers as well as conducting research, we are all in need of a clear understanding of the concepts of biostatistics. In the past, the practical application of such a science as biostatistics full of numbers and mathematical symbols was considered very tiresome and unappealing to healthcare professionals. In recent years with the availability of easy-to-use statistical software that is no longer an obstacle. We all need to understand biostatistics and if you haven’t already done that then NOW is the time!

GOALS

The aim of this workshop is to enable the participants to understand the concepts behind the basic statistical techniques required in their daily work at their healthcare settings as well as know when and how to use these techniques.

INTENDED LEARNING OUTCOMES

By the end of this course the participants will be able to:

1- Distinguish between different data types.

2- Understand and test normality of data.

3- Know how to select the appropriate statistical test.

4- Conduct tests of hypothesis about the difference in the means of 2 dependant samples.(Paired t test)

5- Conduct tests of hypothesis about the difference in the means of 2 independent samples. (Independent t test)

6- Conduct tests of hypothesis about the difference in the means of 3 or more independent samples.(ANOVA)

7- Understand and compute the coefficient of correlation.

8- Conduct a test of association between 2 categorical variables. (Chi-square test)

9- Understand briefly the meaning and use of non-parametric statistics.

10- Conduct all the above on Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS).

11- Interpret SPSS output for all the above tests and techniques.

12- Reporting results of statistical analysis in a scientifically sound way.
